5 Reasons for Getting a Pub Shed or Garden Bar
I started looking at garden bar ideas during the first covid lockdown in 2020. After a few searches online I found quite a few people had already created some fantastic spaces. Many of them were styled on a classic pub look, often referred to as pub sheds.
I decided it would be absolutely perfect for us, during lockdown we talked about extending the house as my wife and I live with our three children two of them teenagers. So living space was getting tighter as they got older. We decided a new garden building was a great idea and as we love entertaining (Covid restrictions permitting) a garden bar seemed like the ideal choice.
We had an old play house that the kids had outgrown so which would be the ideal spot as it was at the back of our garden and faced the house directly opposite our patio doors. Once we decided on the location the next decision was on the type of building. The ones i’d seen online varied from conversions of new or existing sheds, detached garages, log cabins and summer houses.
The main consideration for us was insulation from both the cold and noise and the style of the building. We wanted something that was different from our current living space but could still be considered a different room. In the end, we decided on a 4 metre by 3.5 meter log cabin as we wanted to leave the timber exposed internally. We had the ceiling and floor insulated and chose a fairly think timber.
Unfortunately, it seemed many others had the same idea as we struggled to find any suppliers with stock, in addition, the timber prices in the Uk were rising fast due to high demand and lower availability due to COVID lock downs.
Eventually, we managed to get our order in and after a long wait, we finally took delivery in late summer 2021.
So the to recap the five reasons behind our decision to get one:
- We often have people around for BBQ’s and the UK weather is unpredictable so that meant many gatherings in our kitchen, and I wanted somewhere a bit different.
- During the covid lockdown, I realised how important social interaction was and how to make the most of the space you have available.
- I wanted to use the outdoor space more, but in all honesty, we rarely had people around once the weather turned. So the patio doors would be locked for a few months once winter set in.
- We have 3 teenagers at home and needed more space to chill, watch TV or mainly entertain our guests.
- I wanted to extend our living space without a costly extension and without the need for planning permission.
Is a log cabin a good choice for a garden bar?
The log cabin we chose proved to be the right choice for us as it provides more than enough space without taking up too much of the garden. At the time of writing, we have had it for a year and we are still absolutely loving it and it has definitely provided us with more usable living space, and I now feel we get more use out of the garden.
It has changed the dynamic when we invite people around. Rather than inviting people just for a meal or BBQ, which usually means last-minute planning to check the weather. We now just have people around to join us for drinks in our bar.
It has definitely been worth it and if you are thinking of getting a pubshed or garden bar I would strongly recommend that you go for it!
